I'm afraid this no longer works with a Maris Piper although I'm told there is some success with attempting the above method while humming the theme tune to Family Fortunes.

It does however work flawlessly with a King Edward. Those in Scotland may wish to have an additional root vegetable nearby.

There are mixed reports of success with a turnip. Of course you're welcome to try at your own risk. I'd advise having a tin of marrowfat peas to hand just for safety reasons.

In Cornwall, of course, a swede is a turnip, so the problem arises.
