1803 is finally installed on my PC.

Timeline looks good, however it appears I'd have to sign in with a Microsoft account to get up to 30 days activity.

The photos app supposedly allows you to do basic cropping of video, but doesn't work with .ts files, which defeats the objective.

1803 roll out now seems to be in full swing. The first thing I notice, Paint now has an extra button marked 'Product Alert', which if clicked on tells you that 'Paint will soon be moving to the Microsoft Store. Don't worry: it will still be free to download once it moves there'.

And whether or not this will be the same Win32 Paint, or some modern app which may or may not continue to have the same functionality remains to be seen.

Seriously? So presumably someone has chosen to open Paint therefore wanted to use it, only to be told that it will shortly be removed from Windows by default and they will then need to re-download it from the store to get back functionality which is currently in the operating system, even though it's all Windows 10.

I've encountered a number of businesses which have developed processes where Paint is used as a simple format conversion/image manipulation tool and therefore assume that it will be there. But now those processes will break because Paint is being deprecated for seemingly no reason other than to try and force people to use their 'Paint 3D' pet project app which is an entirely different beast with an entirely different purpose.

They also are now approaching desperation in trying to get people to use Edge, placing a desktop shortcut to it on the latest build, and causing Edge to also be loaded with a 'You should be using Edge' page the first time you load Internet Explorer. That's on top of any search entered into the start menu causing Edge (in conjunction with a Bing search) to be launched irrespective of what you have set as your default browser.

As I said in previous posts, Windows 10 in a corporate environment is unworkable if the feature set can't be locked down and if default settings aren't respected. And the only version of Windows 10 which has a fixed feature set is not available outside of software assurance, which makes Windows 10 hard to recommend for SME's which can only buy retail SKUs, even with it being a mature OS at almost 3 years old. And since Windows 8/8.1 was a flop, that means that in 2018 the best version of Windows to use in an SME is still the almost decade old Windows 7. I don't understand how they can get Windows 10 so right and yet so wrong.

The most frustrating thing with Win 10 is the occasional pop up asking me if I want to change to the default Win 10 software, despite setting other non-MS software to do the job.

I've noticed the latest features update has now added an 'Edge' shortcut to the desktop. Anyone would think that Microsoft were desperate for people to start using it over Chrome & Firefox. As others have said part of Internet Explorer / Edge's problem is that the software version you could use on your PC was restricted to the version of Windows you were using. If they'd historically allowed users to receive the latest version of IE at least until the operating system had reached it's (expended) end of life for windows updates then I suspect more people would still be using it.

The Windows 10 October Update, version 1809 has been paused by Microsoft due to some customers experiencing a total loss of files after updating, which doesn't resolve by rolling back to 1803.

I updated last week on the day of release and experienced no issues.

Not surprising though that issues will occur. I wonder how much real testing is being done now? All the enthusiasm of the insider program in late 2014/early 2015 was about previewing the next version of WIndows. I doubt there is the same enthusiasm for testing a new build with a few extra things which may or may not trash your system but which is basically the same OS. Certainly I gave up insider testing a long time ago.

I still live in hope that Microsoft will eventually see the insanity in this way of delivering updates. Nothing that has changed in Windows 10 since it launched can justify essentially having to reinstall it every 6 months. Things that have changed could easily have been delivered in the conventional way of service packs & updates against the original 2015 build, and it benefits no one to have a floating feature set where you can't guarantee that something in the operating system now will still be in it after the next update.

I get that when it launched they had high hopes that it would become a universal platform used across many devices and they wanted to do rapid releases to tie in with what phone/tablet operating systems do because they expected Windows to become big on those devices. But all of that has utterly flopped. Windows continues to be the dominant desktop operating system but not much else, and IMO they need to get back to developing it as a desktop operating system, not continuing to plough on as if there is any significant number of people using it for anything else.

And on the desktop, people have come to expect a stable and predictable operating system which isn't going to change very often and has a predictable feature set. It's supposed to be your dependable workhorse, not some fickle thing that constantly evolves on a whim.

I've also had no issues, having updated four machines on day one.

I note that today's patch Tuesday updates have taken us from build 17763.1 to 17763.55.

I updated my Aunt's machine on day one without issue, haven't updated my own yet... because I've not turned it on this week.

I think MS have their timeframes wrong, 6 months is too frequent. The Apple model of once a year seems more sensible. Plus the features in the latest version of 10... couldn't even tell you.

I had issues on my desktop, the installation got to 44%, then it suddenly BSOD'd, said it was "reversing the installation", then the computer would BSOD every time I booted it up, and there was nothing I could do, it would still BSOD trying to get into safe mode, could only even get into the recovery tools via making a recovery USB stick and none of those options worked, so I had to re-install windows. I got as far as finding a log whihc said bootres.dll had somehow got corrupted, but couldn't find a solution despite lots of googling. Thankfully all my documents were moved to the windows.old folder after reinstallation, so I didn't lose them at least (and I had backups of most things). Still had to spend days re-installing stuff and making those tweaks to get things how I like them though.

The taskbar is transparent now. This really is the stuff we all dreamed of in the XP era.

Having spent 3 and a half years making almost no headway with Edge, Microsoft are killing it off (sort of).

Windows will continue to ship with a browser called Edge, but it will be a Chromium-based browser (which according to some sources will even support Google Chrome extensions).

it will not be a UWP app but will be a traditional Win32 program. Possibly a further admission of defeat as UWP has failed to make much headway either as Windows has failed to be much else than a traditional desktop operating system.

The new Edge will also not just be restricted to Windows 10. Windows 7 and 8/8.1 (where the now 5 year old IE11 continues to be the official MIcrosoft web browser) will also get Edge backported too.

Personally I think it's a little too late and the mistakes which led them to their browsers losing so much desktop market share have already been made and it isn't really possible to reverse them.
