Good thinking Batman. Twas a clean install of 2003 from the source disc. Am updating now. Will report back in due course.

EDIT: You're a fucking genius. Nice one!

Glad to support the continued use of Office 2003! Only moved on from it myself due to it becoming harder and harder to work around the differences in newer versions of Excel and finding people less and less receptive to receiving files in the old format - that and it really is nice to be able to have more than 3 levels of conditional formatting.

The file format converter - originally designed for compatibility with Office 2007 - was an acceptable enough tool in it's day but it has never been updated and seems to be getting increasingly less effective as newer features it can't translate properly get increasingly used, to say nothing of features introduced since 2007 it doesn't know about and the frustration of waiting for it to convert every file. All in all, it was finally time to let it go but 2003 despite its age it remains a very capable Office suite which will do more than many users will ever need - and because it's so old it runs at light speed on modern hardware.

And I refuse to pay £70+ for new software when Office 2003 does all I need it to.

It's not like you to use an Americanism. Are you a Trump supporter now?

Whilst we're on the subject of old software being good enough. If you don't need your computer connected to the internet or run (most) modern programs, Windows 2000 is still a damn fine operating system. (Like, for example, running older programs or games in a virtual machine).

I think if you're going back that far you need to find a copy of DOS and install that first before you can get Windows 95 to run!

I think Windows 2000 is the most underrated version of Windows ever. From a technical perspective it was much more of a step forward than XP was (and isn't even that much older). It just wasn't marketed properly (the decision to bottle on doing a home version of 2000 and instead pushing out Windows ME for home users didn't help either) and the fact that it didn't look much different to 98/NT4 led people to write it off as such.

And to be fair, 2000 can run Firefox 12 which still (just about) cuts the mustard for web browsing (it can even run newer versions with various hacks). The aforementioned Office 2003 also runs under 2000. If you accept the (pretty negligible) risk of anything nasty happening with it being connected to the internet having been unpatched for almost 6 years and having no modern firewall or current Virus scanner it will still get the job done.
