That final point is just what I was thinking when I was reading this yesterday. It's almost as if those saying 'they don't contribute anything' are saying 'the only people who don't contribute anything are travellers'. I'm not, of course, saying that that is what people think or are implying on here...

Have you tried reformatting it? You'll lose what's on there (assuming you can't drag things from the hard drive to the computer) but at least it might work again.

For a social site, it seems very silly to make it by invitation-only. They made the same mistake with Wave. Have a trial by all means - Facebook was restricted to one university in the beginning - but don't expect people to stick around with just a few contacts.
