Re: The great beverage debate.

My dearest mother is a militant tea drinker, so much so that she'll happily lecture a waiter in a cafe on how to correctly brew a proper cup of tea. I'm very much a coffee drinker, although I'm happy enough to forgo it if it's not any good. I find that there's nothing worse than a disappointing coff...

Re: Airport "security"

That is *not* the second-most trusted man in Australia.

I respectfully disagree, sir.

Re: Airport "security"

Ah, no, not frozen. That was actually in reference to the second bit, they asked them to take a sip of its contents.

ETA: Oh man, this is just like Doctor Karl, just without the wacky shirts.

I remember in the not very distant past the rule used to be "take a good gulp of that liquid, Sir". That always worked!
A friend of a friend managed to sneak a water bladder full of vodka into a music festival here using that method. Not recommended.

Re: Murdoch's web policy

Surely there's a benefit, though, in having prominent exposure on what would have to be the most popular website in the world? I would think that charging lower prices would be a good idea, since more people would make it possible to bring in more advertising revenue. Given that the reason newspaper...

Re: Murdoch's web policy

The combined daily circulation of the national newspapers is 11,034,758 ( July 2008 ). The regional newspaper circulation is 2,868,544 ( June 2008 ). So that's just under 14 million people who definitely read a newspaper every day, but they probably share the paper with their partner/spouse, collea...

Re: Murdoch's web policy

It would be clever if you could sign up to have the paper delivered on the weekend, and then get access to the website whenever you wanted it. Even though it's there, I don't always look at the paper for news, but I'd much prefer hard-copy versions of the paper on a Saturday and Sunday just because ...

Re: Murdoch's web policy

Is that not an oxymoron? Well look, in Murdoch's interview he said his biggest newspaper websites make, "a couple of million" each in advertising revenue. If he can get just 10,000 people paying say, £15 per month to subscribe to TimesOnline, that's getting on for £2 million per year - plu...

Re: Murdoch's web policy

Public broadcasters are something you don't really get a choice about paying for. Perhaps, then, it raises the question of whether you want to sign up to something you're already paying for? ;) Murdoch's plan has a fatal flaw in that there are lots of alternatives, some better than others, that will...

Re: Murdoch's web policy

Paying for 'basic news' like Murdoch seems to want to do now isn't going to work - in my opinion the money lies in offering extra products and services, like cross-promotional deals with pay TV services, airline upgrades, that kind of thing. A columnist for the Australian here suggested the same thi...
