Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake
On a semi related note:
if coffee chains continue to replace static behind-counter above-eyeline menus (that can be browsed pretty much at leisure while in a queue) with "dynamic" TV screens that rotate between three or four pages 20 seconds apart, one of those pages being a fecking advert ...

Re: Cooking delivery services
For everything there's someone that will buy it, regardless of how stupidly priced or the concept seems.
Then there's the angle of convenience and laziness - certain people are used to having "an app for that" and so these are the types that companies like this cater to, and every other ...

Re: Windows 9 is now Windows 10
MacOS is definitely not perfect, but it’s a lot less noisy. I’m still running an M1 16” Macbook pro and it’s still smooth, battery life amazing and no crapware. It’s not for everyone, but it’s considerably more polished than the open source distributions, and a lot less naggy than Windows if all ...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake
Made a purchase in TG Jones, receipt said TG Jones but when the money was debit from my bank account it was WH Smith.
They're still using WHSmith's systems for at least a year after the sale.
Hohoho, good luck trying to disentangle themselves. Hmm, I wonder what other private-equity ...

Re: The Tesco & other non-Morrisons supermarket thread
All this supermarket chat being reignited got me thinking - I used to live near a supermarket that started as a Safeway, became a Morrisons, then changed to a Somerfield, and now it’s a Sainsbury’s. Anyone else know of a supermarket going through so many different guises?
One near me that's been ...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake
I can imagine it's curtains for the smaller Amazon Fresh stores as Whole Foods typically have fairly larger premises from what I have been into. Unless they're planning to relaunch a "little Whole Foods", along the lines of Tesco Express/Co-Op/Sainsbury's Local etc.
Very right about them having ...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake
I put TG Jones on the endangered list, just down to the fact that it's the not particularly profitable part of what was WH Smith and the fact the rebrand as a result of the divestment was just so naff.
WH Smith had some provenance in the name, this was just made up by a bunch of people in a ...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake
The logo is terrible giving zero indication as to what they sell. I would probably have guessed greeting cards or women's fashion.
However, I have enquired with the relevant demographic and I am assured that in fact claire's remains quite popular with younger kids so I wonder if it might get ...

Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread
This seems to be quite common with supermarkets - they hide things behind walls, freezers etc. I know some of the older Morrisons stores still have those tiles with the different fish on and false windows that were part of Market Street years ago hidden behind those false white walls. I assume it ...

Re: The Tesco & other non-Morrisons supermarket thread
I've always assumed the reason why they have a mixed case is down to the fact they probably get some sort of discount for having both variants from the supplier.
I'm also convinced that the reason why suppliers get a shout out on the packaging of a lot of products in Lidl and are not entirely white ...

Re: The Tesco & other non-Morrisons supermarket thread
B) it’s quite the edge case to have customers coming in with their mobile wallet as the only way to pay and not also have either a physical card with chip and PIN, or cash. Maybe don’t walk into a shop with only one method of paying and no back up?
But for a lot of people, their phone is their ...
