Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread

My local store (Hedge End, Southampton) had it's Pharmacy removed several months ago, I was expecting them to install more shelving however it's just a large empty space, does anyone know what the plan is for these spaces?! Also recently a load more staffed checkouts were removed leaving only 10! Pa...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

a real shame about Paperchase, will definitely be a gap in the High Street for a more premium card and stationery shop

Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread

Sainsbury's are closing the majority of their Cafe's - some to be run by external companies such as Carluccio's or Starbucks. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60574697

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

There's some interesting ideas in this article on what might happen to some of the units, personally I'll miss Debenhams, I worked at their Southampton store for several months back in 2005...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

I wonder what's going to happen to all the Debenhams stores around the country, it's gonna leave some pretty big gaps in city centres - especially in shopping centres where they were the anchor store. Should the government be doing more to support stores and the High Street in general? https://www.t...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

I do wonder how Debenhams let it get to this point. We don't know all the details of course, but you have to wonder how many of their stores were loss making and falling to bits - and dragging the whole brand down as a result. Why not focus on the stores that do make a profit, invest in the ones wi...

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

Is it just me or has the demise of Topshop/Man felt incredibly quick? I'm sure it was only two years ago the stores (in London at least) were still regularly very busy. Come this summer and with capacity restrained it was pretty much the only clothes shop in Westfield that didn't have a queue outsi...

Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread

Still showing as a temporary closure of the counters in my local Sainsbury's! I wonder what will go in their place, this store (Hedge End) was only refurbished a year ago!

Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54827984 A different perspective on how deli counters help reduce waste and the use of packaging - sometimes if you live alone you just want a couple of slices of ham or 1 piece of fish. It does feel like Sainsbury's are in a race to the bottom with cost cutting ...

Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread

I'm surprised at Sainsbury's closing all their deli, meat & fish counters - I can understand in small stores they may not be so well used but the the large out of town stores I would have thought they'd make a profit. Will Tesco follow?

Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

WHSmith is laying off its 1500 staff tomorrow. Many experienced managers and supervisors have had the chop. And most high street staff still on furlough will be gone. Most under 18's laid off except in the biggest stores. Small stores now running single manned from Sunday. Mainly 4 hour shifts. 20 ...
