BBC Proms Protest, 1st September 2011

Tonight's BBC Prom, broadcast live as usual on Radio 3 was interrupted by a sizeable protest in the Royal Albert Hall. Nothing on the BBC News website that I can see, but I did find this link which seems to suggest it was planned and publicised http://londonbds.org/ . The orchestra had been playing ...

Re: Heart FM Changes

Sad news indeed. They're reducing the number of stations from 33 to 15 and moving many to "supersites", playing on the investement in new studio equipment rather than the reduction in the number of premises. The email to staff makes it clear that where a station is to co-site with another there will ...

Re: Dotun Adebayo

I just love "Up All Night", especially when they do the US-UK simulcast phone-ins. They must be an absolute nightmare to achieve, though I'm sure once you've done one as a Studio Manager, they're pretty similar? The radio anorak comes right back out of me when they do those! I think they've been ...

Re: Green Screens

All this said, a blue cloth can work better for people with blonde hair. I have found that blonde hair can pick up a bit too much of any reflected green from the cloth which doesn't help fringing at all. Of course, moving the talent away from the cloth would help no end here, but sometimes given ...

Re: Green Screens

Backlighting in magenta can help reduce fringing in some cases if you find the halo effect too much to bear. I've had mixed results with this, but it's worth a try. As other posters have said, the best thing you can do is get the talent as far away from the cloth as you can. Also don't be tempted to ...

Re: Obscure equipment I can say my TV License was spent on

Wow, I had no idea that Pioneer still made them!! I remember a large music/video shop selling the discs in the mid 1990s while I was at university. They had a fair number of titles ISTR but I'm not sure I saw their stock levels lessen much in the time I was a customer with them. It reminds me of ...

Re: Obscure equipment I can say my TV License was spent on

You could also try and get your hands on a RATS alarm (I think that's a BBC invention - it's essentially a Radio 4 Long Wave receiver connected to a box of tricks that triggers a flashing light and/or an audible alarm in newsrooms and radio/tv control suites to warn of a major news report). Can't ...

Re: Obscure equipment I can say my TV License was spent on

I think World and Prime managed to get some of the very last laserdisc stock left in the country when they rebranded both channels in 1999. The fireworks set (actually called 'Festival') for BBC Prime and the excellent 1999 set for BBC World with David Lowe's music. I think Prime had two laserdiscs ...

Re: Obscure equipment I can say my TV License was spent on

So what happened when the end of the disc was reached? Did the symbol fade to black and then fade back in, or was there a jump as the laser returned to the beginning?

You mean with the looped globe?

That was long before my time I'm afraid, I assume that they just had to make sure they re-cued ...
