Re: High Street chain collapse sweepstake

In short the stores affected are the ones which were originally Somerfields stores before the Co-Operative brought them out, and then sold them on to Budgens. I wonder how many of those were originally Kwik Save stores. I can think of a few that made the conversion to Somerfield and then Co-Operati...

Re: State of the high street

Stirling was hit quite badly by the recession. Woolworths sat empty for around 3 years before being entirely gutted internally (the store fit had been the same for decades before it closed). We lost a Peacocks, JJB, Game (the pervious Gamestation unit became Game and the larger 'Game' closed) and Wa...

Re: Mrs T

I know everybody hated the poll tax because for many people it meant they had to pay more tax - but isn't it a fairer proposition? Regardless of the size of a house, a home with 8 people will use more public services than an apartment with 1 person in it - so why should the single male in the penth...

Re: Mrs T

Because none of what you mentioned has anything to do with the passing of a lady in her late 80s. If my Nana (who for the last few years of her working life, during Thatcher's premiership, was the senior union person for hundreds of Raleigh/Sturmey Archer workers in Nottingham) is able to separate ...

Re: The Unofficial Sainsbury's Thread

Yup, font consistency at Sainsbury's was always pretty darned awful when I worked there. Any temporary notices tended to be A4 bits of paper with Times New Roman. I remember once being told to create some product advertising which included clip art even though it's easy to generate barker cards usin...

Re: The EU

I'd actually quite like to see more votes. Money should be invested in technology that allows a referendum to be held regularly and cheaply. Don't they vote much more regularly on things in Switzerland? In the internet age, the idea of us just voting for an MP and him having a sort of say in what k...

Re: World Service to axe The World Today

A very good send off but a very somber show. It's clear that this is just another budget cutting measure (the BBC makes 2 English language programmes on weekday mornings, as of Monday it will only make one) but it is clear that The World Today is well regarded across Europe and North America (I thin...

Re: The Tesco & Other non-Morrisons Supermarket Thread

Wood seems to be the in thing in supermarket design at the moment. The Sainsbury's I used to work in underwent a major refit last year and all the counters had lots of wood effect stuff put in (thankfully the refit came early enough for us to avoid the nasty serif font they've now adopted) Off brand...
