i've never really bothered experimenting with any software development with apple devices (you need a mac to do the build, even in visual studio)... but i assumed that ios apps were like android apps in that they are compiled to an abstract hardware agnostic intermediate byte code and then compiled...

Microsoft are not alone in skipping OS version numbers - skipping to 10 as if it has some kind of significance is a bit of an annoying trend triggered by MacOSX. What trend exactly - releasing OS X after Mac OS 9? God forbid me to defend WillPS, but I think he means that OSX made the "10"...

In my experience, if a chip can't be detected, there are capabilities for it to be put through manually using 'the old-fashioned' way. That includes on the Self Service tills.
